We have divided the suppressor category into four main types:
Rifle
Pistol
Rimfire
Shotgun
Each type can have specific features that make it ideal for a certain firearm, such as a large-bore rifle suppressor that is magnum-rated or a rimfire suppressor that is easy to disassemble and clean due to how dirty rimfire ammunition shoots.
Other features to look for when finding the right type of suppressor for your application include:
Magnum-Rating
Full-Auto Rating
Mount Type (quick-detach vs. direct-thread)
Thread Size/Pattern (very important!)
Suppressors are also designated by cartridge or caliber based on their internal diameter (i.e. 5.56 NATO, 9mm Luger, 338 Lapua Mag). This indicates the largest diameter round that can be fired through the suppressor and most likely which round will experience the best sound suppression.
Keep in mind that suppressors can be used for bullets of a smaller diameter, but the user will likely see a slight reduction in sound suppression capability.
